Why I’m Leaving AT&T On January 2, 2011
Reason 1: Money
I got a lovely reminder from AT&T that while my contract wasn’t up until January 2, 2011, because I was such a valued customer I was eligible to renew my contract and get the iPhone 4…for signing up for another 2 years. So I took my letter to my local AT&T store just to see how valued I was.
I told the very nice lady (and she really was) that before I signed up for another 2 years, would they mind knocking about $50 a month off my bill to match what I could get with Sprint. I mean, I am such a valued customer.
Apparently, I wasn’t that valued of a customer.
The lady told me I was getting a better deal with AT&T than Sprint because of hidden fees and taxes. While I think I pay those taxes regardless who my phone carrier is, I decided to play along. I gave her the handout and quote I had just gotten from Sprint the day before.
“So you think I missed some fine print, huh?” I asked. She said “Probably. Got to make sure that you compare apples to apples.” She grabbed the AT&T map and walked me through AT&T pricing… because apparently I can’t read by myself. Let it be known, I never saw an apple the entire time…but that’s another story.
AT&T: 2 phones, 750 minutes shared for 129.99. PLUS $20 per phone per month for unlimited text, unlimited data. To add another line is only $9.99. BUT you have to pay extra for text and data on that phone. That’s another $20. Total Bill: $170.00., $200 if we add another line.
Sprint: 2 phones, 1500 minutes shared for 129.99. (So…is 1500 apples more or less than 750 apples?) This price includes unlimited text AND unlimited data. To add a line is $20 and includes text and data. Plus we get a discount because we are USAA customers (23%). Just for grins I told her we could add another $10 for 4G phones. Total Bill: $113.00, $133.00 if add a line.
“Well….you’re right. That’s definitely not apples to apples, is it? So what am I missing?” I asked.
“The iPhone 4.”
Reason 2: HTC EVO
I love my Mac, iPods, iMac, and iPhones. The iPad is the coolest thing in the world and I wish I had one of those too. I love the brand.
But the gap is not as wide in the phone market anymore. Not to justify spending that much more.
So after many years with AT&T and Cingular before them, we’ll be leaving them for Sprint. The Android Market and HTC EVO is making it a lot easier to do.
Making It In A Technologically Frustrated World
I’m working on getting rid of the clutter in my life. It’s a hard process but the first step is to be utterly ruthless with throwing things away that you aren’t going to use or haven’t used in a year. In an electronic world, this is getting harder to do because it’s just a file, right? It’s time as well.
I’ve got 6 pages of apps on my iPhone because you never know when you’re going to want to know the name of that actor in that abstract film or how to say “I can’t see how this could possibly go wrong” in Pig Latin.
But I’ve figured some things out.
First, I’m done with Facebook. Yes, I still have an account and my updates will be updated (from the department of redundancy and repetitive department) but through Twitter. With the ‘respond to a comment via email’ feature now, I don’t ever have to get on their ridiculous cluttered site. Except when someone DM’s me and it takes me days to respond.
The truth is this – and I’m sorry if this hurts your feelings – but I don’t care about your farm, mafia hits, bejeweled scores, treasure hunts, movie quizzes or which character on LOST you are most like. Really…I don’t. I’m guessing most other people don’t either, they are just too scared to tell you. And since Facebook chooses to change the layout every 6 hours and I can’t or won’t take the time to figure out how to filter all the junk off my feed – it got punted.
Twitter — you are becoming a favorite. It’s simple. It’s clean. It’s fast. It works awesome on my iPhone. I can set up a list as to who I want to keep updated with. However, the whole following thing is intriguing to me. It is baffling to me who chooses to follow me. For instance, Dave Matthews Blog is following me. I’m honored and humbled. One of my favorite artists in the world. I reciprocated.
PETAnews and WiiGameCheats are also following me. I’m not as honored. In fact, I’m fairly confused as I’ve never posted anything about PETA…perhaps the Wii but the only cheating I do is take steroids before playing Guitar Hero. And while I’m not for the torture of any animal that isn’t a cat, I’ve enjoyed my fair share of animals with a side of potatoes and a nice Chianti.
Email – Handle it once. File it, respond to it, delete it, or keep it unread. Pretty straightforward, right? It is but the email inbox can get cluttered…very quickly. One solution I’ve come up with is that anything marked with FW and has like 50 other people on the recipient list gets spammed. Amazing how much that clears up the inbox.
There is one thing that is happening in my ministry circle that I don’t understand – signing other pastors/ministers up for email updates. It’s happened a couple of times. Some well meaning person signs me up for prayer updates across the globe and all of a sudden, my inbox is slammed. I’ve tried having one conversation about this and I quickly learned there is no way to NOT look like a jerk when you are asking to be unsubscribed from Johnny’s kidney replacement prayer update. Spam filters are wonderful things though.
I grew up using a computer, using email. If I want to sign up for an email update, I am perfectly able to do just that. I don’t need help. If you do that for me…you just lost your right to be in my inbox. (By the way, Danny P…I’m sorry for the Britney Spears Fan Club Update Newsletter I signed you up for last year. I’ve since repented. I hope you’ve forgiven me.)
iPhone — “I haven’t opened my Bible all week.” That is literally true for me thanks to the YouVersion.com app on my phone. Daily bible reading plans are right there, bookmarks. With Kindle and the web, I’m almost close to having my whole library accessible on my iPhone. And I love my iPhone. Can’t wait for 4.0.
I’m pretty sure that this culture’s golden calf is the iPhone. Or at least the technology behind it. To be able to put a web browser, pda, gps, email, camera, and phone in one device astounding. The problem is that we think it creates more time and more space to make life easier. That isn’t always true. Here’s to less clutter.
E-cards for iPhones
I was about to send Amy an e-card today and realized…she can’t open it on her iPhone. What to do?
Go to ecardlets.com. It’s pretty cool, pretty basic. Looks like you can even design your own card and send if you have the time.
Updated Blog
Upgraded or updated the backside of my blog. Nothing noticable on your end other than a couple of plugins to update.
I can now post and upload pics from my iPhone again. Yeah.
This is Cayden playing a concert for our cul-de-sac.
The Pandora Experiment
Robert Terrell was the first person I remember talking about Pandora. Actually, it may have been the other Rob “Orangejack” Williams. Either way, I’ve been using it this week for the first time – thanks mainly to the iPhone app.
I love it. The basic premise is this – you tell the site an artist that you really like. It goes and gets music that matches it. It creates this radio station for you and as the new music is played, you give it a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
The more you vote, the more accurate it gets.
For me – it’s hitting home runs every single time. I have a John Mayer/Stevie Ray Vaughn channel. Incredible matches. I’m finding new artists that I like, new music to jam out to…perfect.
Test Driving My iPhone
I am writing this from my iPhone trying out the WordPress app. It really is a pain to type on the phone for a long blog but for a short one it would work.
Any one else out there blog from their phone?
Favorite iPhones Apps
I love my iPhone. Absolutely love it. Too many cool features of the phone itself to list although the visual voicemail is worth the price of the phone by itself.
The coolest thing are the apps. Here’s my favorite list so far. If you’ve got an iPhone – slap your favorites in the comments.
vlingo – speak it and it happens. Search, call, map, update facebook. The ultimate hands free app.
google – the reader is awesome but you can hit all things google from this single app.
aroundme – looking for a gas station, coffee shop, diner, or a vet? Slap on location services and off you go. Absolutely astonishing and amazing. We’re using this alot in Topeka so far.
shazam – What’s the song they’re playing? Now you know. Hold iPhone up to hear it, it will find it for you on iTunes.
SnapTell – find a book, CD, DVD on Amazon just by taking a picture of it’s cover.
OneTap – want to know what’s showing and where and see the trailer? This is the app for you.
USAToday – it’s the best of the news/sports apps out there. And by best I mean most stable. ESPN and others should steal this app and use it instead of the ones they are currently using.
facebook – if you’ve got facebook, you pretty much have to use this but it’s glitchy. It’s on the list because it’s the best I’ve seen so far but…it’s not stable and I resist using it. I use vlingo to update.
Got any you want to add?
