Dragon Slayers
As Grace stumbles forward in looking for a youth pastor, I’ve been thinking (and writing) alot about how I can help him/her without getting in the way. The last couple of posts have been some of these thoughts. (What Every Volunteer Needs, New Youth Pastors Really Need)
There are so many things that are good at Grace that I think are going to help that transition.
Space
Not physical space (although the youth room does look sweet now), but space to try crazy ideas. Space to hang out with volunteers and teens. Every year we’ve done something different. And while all of the ideas didn’t work out, it did establish a culture of fluidity (is that a word??) and flexibility….and space.
Leaders
This one is a double-edged sword. The great thing about leading leaders is the synergy that happens. The bad thing – can’t be a control freak. We’ll drive you to drink.
Laughter
This bunch of students and volunteers absolutely love to laugh. I mean hard laugh. That is a welcome change over the last 4 years. And I think you can walk through about anything if there is laughter.
Jesus
Yea – dog-pile on Grant time. Church answer. Squirrel!!! But seriously…the top 2 questions we float around to each other are “What is Jesus telling you to do?” and “Who in your community is confirming that?” It’s that simple…not necessarily easy…but simple.

interesting you add her in there. that seems to be a different direction than grace is used to taking.
Would you have a problem with a female youth pastor? (I already some of the guys – “Well, it depends. How good looking is she?”)
haha. no i wouldnt, it just sounds a little methodist, and coming from grant, the former baptist, it did sound a little surprising. haha but think about all the guys that would come to church if we had a hot youth pastor…
haha good point clay… a hot youth pastor?…could be interesting
