Why Youth Ministry

I am completely at a new level of torquenessed.

Got an email from someone who is NOT AT GRACE that wants my thoughts on the attached document.

I should have deleted it.

The document asks three questions of every youth group.

Where does the idea of youth group comes from?
What are the results of modern youth groups?
What is a biblical philosophy of youth ministry?

Some of my favorite items:

The only example of youth groups in the bible is in 2 Kings 2 – the youths that insulted the prophet. The “obvious” conclusion then is this, and I quote:

“The results of youth groups are atrocious, and they are not worthy of repetition.”

“He calls all churches in all generations to look to His Word instead. When the
church does this, I expect that she will abandon her youth groups.”

Well, we better get rid of the finance team, women’s ministry, men’s ministry, children’s ministry, missions team, committee on committee AND after school care programs AND small groups. Because none of them are explicitly mentioned in scripture either.

I’ve got a truckload of scripture I want to shove back in the face but the only one that the Spirit is whispering to me right now is 2 Timothy 2:23.

That should do the trick! :-)

  2. Grant says:

    It seldom does. hehehee…

I’ve got to respond with something though…because the word also says this…

    2 Timothy 2:24-26

I’m not even sure that we can say that a paid pastor is a Biblical position. But that doesn’t stop us from having it. Many of the things we do in church, whether we like it or not, are the result of adapting to a cultural need.
